Tororo

A2N-Uganda has been working in Tororo since 1997 and is currently implementing the Soil Productivity Initiative through Research and Education/Farmer Field Schools (INSPIRE/FFS) project with support from Rockefeller Foundation and technical backstopping by FAO, and Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) project supported by Plan International Uganda.

Facts about Tororo:

  • Tororo is located in the Eastern region of Uganda and has 4 Counties and 55 sub-counties
  • Languages spoken are Japadhola, Lusamia-Lugwe, Ateso, Lugwere, Lugisu and Lunyoli
  • Population is estimated at 559,528 of which 90% live in rural areas as subsistence farmers
  • Agricultural problems like most of Eastern Uganda is sandy soil which is highly susceptible to leaching, low rainfall and over exploitation of the land resulting in declining agricultural productivity and recurrent food shortages resulting into famine
  • Crops grown are finger millet, rice, maize, cassava, groundnuts, sweet potatoes, sorghum, beans, Soya beans, cow peas, simsim, bananas, sunflower, cotton and vegetables
  • Main cash crops are cotton and vegetables such as onions
